Frequently Asked Questions

How often Should I desludge my Wastewater Treatment Unit?
In general, on average about 1.5 to 3 years. This depends on a few factors:
- How much usage in a household?
- How well are the bacteria working?
- What is the size of the Wastewater Treatment plant or septic tank?

How often should I empty/desludge my septic tank?
In general, on average about 1.5 to 3 years. Again, it depends largely on how many occupants are using the house and how well the bacteria in the tank are working.

Should Septic Tanks ever be emptied?
Yes, Septic tanks need to be desludged from time to time. The bacteria in your septic tank can do a very good job at breaking down the sewerage, however sludge does eventually build up. This sludge gets thicker and thicker and needs to be removed. Don’t worry. When your septic tank is emptied, there will still be millions of bacteria left on the walls and floor to continue the bacteria process.

How do I know if my Wastewater Treatment Unit or Septic tank needs to be desludged?
Give us a call and we can ask you the right questions to discern if it needs to be desludged.
- How many occupants in a house?
- How long ago since it was last desludged?
- Is it a Wastewater Treatment Unit or Septic Tank?
- Sludge levels?

How much does it cost to desludge or empty my Wastewater Treatment Plant or septic tank?

What is the difference between a septic tank and a Wastewater Treatment Plant?
In a nutshell, there really is no contest between the two. A sewage treatment plant does much more than a septic tank, but the terms are often confused and used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, a septic tank is not a sewage treatment plant.
- Sewage treatment plants have mechanical components, which means that they need a permanent electrical supply to operate. There are no such components in a septic tank, and so it operates without a power supply.
- A typical septic tank has one or two 'zones', whereas a sewage treatment plant typically has three.
- A sewage treatment plant provides treatment of the waste by creating a much better environment for bacteria to thrive. A septic tank primarily separates the solids and depends on naturally occurring bacteria to help break down the sewerage. - this means that the wastewater that leaves a sewage treatment plant is cleaner than what leaves a septic tank.

What is the reason for Treatment Plants?
The primary reason for a wastewater treatment plant is to receive and treat the sewage and wastewater from your dwelling.

Why is a wastewater treatment plant better than a septic tank?
A sewage treatment plant is better than a septic tank because it actively treats the incoming sewage by aerating (adding oxygen) to the wastewater, either by a small air blower, or naturally via ventilation. The extra oxygen accelerates the natural biological process of breaking down the waste in the sewage. this means that the wastewater that leaves a sewage treatment plant is cleaner than what leaves a septic tank.
